NEMESIS, ALTON TOWERS

Working with Merlin Entertainments and Alton Towers, JPSS developed the PLC control system that drives the Nemesis icon’s pneumatic eye movements and integrates directly with the attraction’s Medialon show-control platform.

Illuminated Nemesis icon and eye at Alton Towers

The rebuilt Nemesis environment at Alton Towers centres on a large animated icon positioned within the ride structure. Its eye movements needed to respond precisely to creative cues while remaining integrated with the attraction’s wider show-control system.

Working directly with Merlin Entertainments and Alton Towers, JPSS developed the PLC control system responsible for the icon’s pneumatic eye movement. The PLC interfaces with the attraction’s Medialon platform, allowing movement cues to be coordinated alongside the wider audio, lighting and show effects.

For creative programming, a lighting console was used as the movement input. Art-Net data was passed into Medialon, where it was interpreted and translated into commands for the PLC. This gave the programming team an intuitive live tool for shaping eye movement while maintaining controlled and repeatable execution at the PLC layer.

Our specialist scope included:

  • PLC architecture and programming for the Nemesis icon’s pneumatic eye movements.
  • Development of the interface between the PLC and the attraction’s Medialon show-control system.
  • Art-Net input from a lighting console, enabling movement to be programmed through a familiar creative workflow.
  • Medialon logic to interpret incoming Art-Net values and pass movement commands to the PLC.
  • Integration of the Siemens control hardware, HMI, pneumatic valves, sensors and position feedback.
  • Factory testing, on-site installation support, commissioning and final movement refinement with Merlin Entertainments and Alton Towers.

The result is a robust control chain that allows the eye to be programmed creatively from the lighting console while keeping movement execution and control within the PLC system.
